Campers thrown into different worlds at Museum Mania

Call them the Knights of the Craft Table.

They fashioned tinfoil shields, gem-studded goblets and even a castle out of cupcakes. In the process, these local youth also immersed themselves in rich medieval history — and managed to have some fun — at the Delhi Tobacco Museum & Heritage Centre.

The local cultural hotspot's one-of-a-kind summer program is off to a full swing again this summer. Participation has picked up this year, said Melissa Dol, co-ordinator of the camp. This swelling of interest will allow the museum to run all its planned daily summer camp sessions.

"I think it's a lot of older kids bringing their siblings," Dol said of the piqued participation.

It also helps that Museum Mania isn't a run-of-the-mill summer camp. Each session is geared towards a specific theme, allowing campers to learn about the Egyptian pyramids one day followed by a bowling session at the Delhi German Home the next day.

"We have a really good group of kids this year," added Dol, who has also served as camp coordinator in previous years. "It's been fun."

The experience has allowed Jacob McIntyre to create new friendships. He moved to Delhi last July.

"I just like to come here, meet new friends and make crafts," he said, racing outside with some fellow campers.

For Bennett Cowan, 12, volunteering at the camp allows him to stay involved with it. He has been a participant of the summer camp "ever since I could," but he has now reached the age limit. This is his second summer volunteering at the camp.

"I learned how to help out the people smaller than you and be nice and stuff like that," he said.

While the bulk of the participants are from the Delhi area, there are some from across Norfolk County. Many have enjoyed previous summers at the camp and encourage friends to sign on for the Museum Mania program.

"We have kids from all over this year, which is nice," Dol added.
